My yard got broke into over the weekend, they broke into our container with a grinder, but only got away with a few bits, a nearls new Evolution mitre saw, my new Gradient laser level with tri-pod,(the one evryone on here bought on special offer) a Dewalt corded SDS drill, my Stihl saw and a broken Bush cutter.
I'm insured, but it's the second time in less than 6 months, they stole a mates 8 wheeler last time, and we know who it is because they live up the lane from our yard, in a camp set aside specifically to look after their cultural needs, and we have them on camera, kind of, although apparantly not clearly enough for the law to do anything about it!!
My insurance only runs to £1,200, so I may have to put some of me own towards replacements.....And it's raining again!!!!!!
The real bummer is that I can't even add a few items on the insurance if I wanted too(not that I would of course), I'll maybe just be able to get back most of what was stolen, and I bet those levels aren't on special offer now. It is a catch 22 isn't it. You need storage space, many of us ain't lucky enough to have room at home, so you rent somewhere cheap, usually a lock up or container and then your fair game for all the local low life to come calling. Our yard has an 8' corrugated fence round it, barbed wire and camera, probably that's what attracted them, usually means there's something worth nicking.
If I had the balls and firepower, I would go up the Gippo camp and storm the gates, but that's probably not me best option, however satisfying.
Thing is I know a few of the older guys on the site, and their sound. I've asked about, but they are a closed shop, and I don't know any of them that well for them to sort it, that's if they did come from the camp. The Police just said the images are to vague and not clear enough for an identity. To be fair, I only really wanted a crime No, and I know they're way to busy to feck about chasing crappy little tea leaves, but still.

when we had a yard they nicked the bleeding gearbox out of the bedford one night
after that we had 5 lock ups at one point but you end up keeping stuff you really shouldnt kkeep
so now we try to keep it to tools that we use at least monthly
been hiring wackers the last 2 years
£28 including delivery and collection and full of petrol seems a bargain to me compared with the constant pain of it getting nicked

we protect our shipping containers making it harder to cut the locks or latches off, weld metal boxes over the padlocks so only the key bit at the bottom is available and just think how would i break into this then weld more to them, get some big lights up on towers so they have to work in full view and then if youve got a phone line their get cctv that viewable on the interent that alerts you to movement.
weve got some trip mines that fire blank shotgun shells we used to fix them over door ways on new builds scares the shit out of anyone and leaves ears ringing for a while, (tested one) hehe

the bit on the left is important our first incarnation didnt have it and it allowed the box to be levered open enough to get bolt crops in, so then we added the bit on the left door. i'll take some pics next week
Ive thought about combining materials to make a laminate ie clad the doors in timber so you cant get to the metal to grind it off and you cant cut the timber due to the metal beneath Hey! or even a bit of stone cladding! mmm very nice
my uncle lived in jo burg in howton opposite the golf course there, mandela was rd the corner. big house he had mains electric fence, double gates, 2 armed guards with german shepards cctv etc, he said youve just got to make your self a hard target as they will go some where else. if you are an easy target then you will be targetted.
the harder you make it the higher the likely hood of them fecking off else where.
some ideas of the top of my head, 2 rhino posts or 1 even infront of the doors.
a length of 3 inch box section that slides in across both doors with the internal locks like on roller shutters
2 padlocks on the door not on the latches protected by anti cut boxes
