Think I remember seeing another thread about this, wasn't there a regular here who provided a standard letter to send to the gas board telling them to cram it?
edit: Found it. Thread with appeal letter

ive got a number of a guy £200 to weld them
or cough cough ive heard of water main compression fittings being used in the past
we installed our own gas to our hillside 3 miles of pipe and 14 farms still cost us £10k to have a few murphys lads come do all the joints and live connection and sign it off.

its not something to be messed with as far as I am concerned and the liability if anything should go wrong after you have jointed it is not worth thinking about - wave bye bye to your house
I damaged a small bore pipe August last year (first one ever on a domestic driveway) and got billed over £ 700, it was less than 4 feet away from the house meter and was billed for changing the old metal into plastic, the bit i put a road pin through was plastic but adjacent to that was the old metal pipework leading into the house
I disputed the amount and it was reduced and then reduced again after speaking to the girl from the solicitors acting on behalf of united utilities and have only just paid a reduced amount yet again of £ 275 otherwise I was being taken to court
there is no minimum depth any more, I worked for a couple who both work for utility companies and the days are gone of them automatically accepting liability if the service is less than a certain depth, its up to the guy who calls to have a look at the damage to assess if they will accept liability
