Bradsone carpet stone for patio - Conflicting advice

Setts and cobbles, tarmac, asphalt, resin systems, concrete whether it's plain, patterned or stencilled, gravels, etc.

Hi

I'm going to be laying around 40m2 of carpet stone to the rear of my garden away from the house and any walls. The advice given on Bradstones site states that a 6.1 mix of sharp sand and cement is sufficient to lay the stones on. There's no mention of a sub base when laying on a patio

But when I checked out Simply paving the advice says that a a sub base of crusher run should be used first. Contacted Bradstone but have yet to receive a reply. Simply paving got back to me, telling me that they get their advice from Bradstone and it seems that Bradstone has updated their advice on the product and if I'm happy to follow that advice "you should be fine"

"Should be fine" does not install much confidence in me.

Which of the two are offering the best advice? Your sites been really helpful to me and from what I've read using a sub base is good advice. I wont be laying near the house, so would just
digging out 75mm plus the depth of the stone and laying them on a 6.1 mix be ok, or is it more advisable to lay a sub base down first? If so, what depth for a patio? Any advice on edging would be great to as there's no boundaries for me to lay against.

Many thanks. Great site!

Hi

Thanks for reply, pal.
Given bradstones advice on laying for patios
is one's not needed. Would a 50mm sub-base
be enough?

Cheers

It would be better than no subbase :D
I would go 3inchs then 2 inches of bedding layer. You could go less but mine would outlast yours. Lot of money and effort for the sake of an inch deeper dig.

According to the 300 emails in my inbox women would do anything for that extra inch.
