Hi,
I am about to start paving two patios using Limestone. They are not large areas, so I had planned to use 3 different paver sizes to create a less "busy" random pattern than I would get using the standard 5 different sizes as discussed on this website. The supplier is offering the following 3 sizes: 600x600, 600x300, 300x300.
Do you think these are ideal sizes?
From what I can see, the following sizes seem to be more typical when paving using 3 different sizes: 600x450, 450x450, 450x300.

Although it's difficult, it's not impossible to create a random layout using those 3 sizes: I've done it in the past.
Generally speaking, the more sizes available, the more random will be the eventual layout. Using just 3 sizes limits the opportunity for randomness, and you find the same 'motifs' repeating themselves every so often, which can be a problem on larger areas.

Thanks Tony,
I have been sketching up a rough paving plan and am surprised how random you can get with just three sizes. As you said, I am finding there are some repeating motifs but I sort of like that to a degree anway and the patios aren't that big so definately think I will stick with those paver sizes.
