Looks great to me, a little bit off straight but with tolerances given by the wall built later its all good, i would love more experience on that kind of work.

I have seen and been involved in far worse shutters than that,4 inch nails,4 by 2, and sheets of ply
and that was on a £50million pound shopping centre albeit in 1990
we have to have a little balance here,what giles and co have removed and redone is so far superior to what was there its like chalk and cheese
we had to remove a kitchen ceiling today at work,the dreaded artex
i rang 2 local asbestos removal firms and they wanted £600 and £700 +vat to remove 9 square metres of plasterboard
i went and bought 2 all in 1 suits and 2 respirators and we did it ourselves in 1 hour and double bagged it for collection
life is full of danger, we can reduce it but eliminating it costs so much its nigh impossible

alas sean and rab live in the heady heights of not worrying about pricing and winning jobs they can have their perfect world, albeit most the "safety" things the big business do are not motivated by the safety of the men but by their exposure to liability, as tony says should have seen the first wall hence why i went out and spent £1000 on wailers tie rods and drilling all the shutters at 300 intervals to fit m10 bolts through.

i could have priced it and spec'd it to the standard we'd do for nhs work etc but the house holder would have laughed at me when i told him instead of £12k it was going to cost £80k,

weve got a saying rd here, if your auntie had balls she'd be your uncle. the shutter didnt creak or move there was one joint that bulged 20mm, id have stopped the pour if there was any signs of it being dangerous.

unfourtunatly you two dont live in the real world like the rest of us do, im no fly by night endangering ppl but the standard you guys think is correct is a corporate cost reduction strategy, and there are still more deaths on big sites than small sites.

sean i choose to post pics warts and all, tony does as well most stick with finished jobs as we can all be experts from our keyboards.

last time you had the step ladders out at home, did you get them checked first, did you do a risk assesment and have your fully ppe on inc gloves and glasses, did you have a method statement? did you drill and anchor your steps to a wall as well as seems the new trend etc of course you didnt but on yor sites youd to...

you boys have lost the ability to asses your own risk its all about avoiding any potential liability for the big firms or having someone to blame, i bet far worse goes on day to day from most on here. you cant operate and stay afloat doing the hse practices of the big boys on the rates we get.

they are not wrong giles ,but we would never work if we had to work to multinationals safety

i could hardly tell an OAP that it was going to cost her £720 to remove a kitchen ceiling
doing it my way cost her £200 but its a judgement call
all my subbies are going on an asbestos awareness course on the 18th,costing us £500 but they want paying for the morning

because we need to do this course to be able to tender for any more council stuff
Its actually £540 +vat,but any who do not attend will not be able to work on council jobs end of
we can take up to 20men,we just had to hire a suitable meeting room

The same goes for LGV CPC training - I need my lads to be able to drive the trucks for us to do the work. Means a day off the tools with no productive work.Not good for business!

just wondering about people who have been in the game for a number of years why they haven't got stock material in their yard to enable them to do a professional job? Everyone comments on quality of falseworks, temporary works, good work and shite work. But should rab and i mention anything, we get shot down in flames. We know your safety record giles, especially with hot works, bet you wish we were there then to point out the hazards. hazards.

...also i have taken risks, still do but over the years i have been taught, sometimes self taught to put other peoples safety on par with mine. We all comment. To of the biggest killers, working at height and deep excavations, both of which you do giles. No way would i have my auld fella up on a shutter, no ppe, harness, or scaffolding. Yes strongbacks are safe but only when spaced correctly and with proper whalings. Pokering that shutter is an accident waiting to happen

thats the thing though i didnt have him up there, he did that on his own back helping, tony will know its hard to tell your dad what to do especially when he's 'helping'

i was keeping an eye on the shutter as we gentley filled it, i wouldnt have had them poke it had it been showing any signs of moving, tilting etc.

apologies if my tone was harsh before got home to find my next door but 1 neighbour, friend and former university lecturer had hung himself, my next door neighbour told me. 48 years old, saw him the other day chatted to him and now hes gone. he got me the job in munich and changed my life and i didnt even know the guy was depressed.
