hi all, 2nd post on this subject. I asked about correct mortar mix for laying york stone sets on top of a old concrete drive. however after reading your archives i'm not sure im doing the right thing. im laying about 6 mtrs to the end of a drive which is concrete at this area, in good condition and rock hard. I was hoping to lay the sets on a mortar bed over the concrete and point up with a romex grout. i know ill have to finish the open edges as you have described in the site , but is this a feasible
method, there will be normal drive traffic over it. the rest of drive will be laid with gravel. I really dont want to dig out the concrete, ive never come across anything so hard. but ill do it if you say its the way to go.
Grateful for any advice

cheers

"you'll need to lay them on a bed of at least 20mm due to the varying thickness of the setts. If the gate is fouling them then could you remount it slightly higher. Romex dran isn't suitable for vehicles and the tyres will push the stone into it."
This is what I posted last time you can't fool me into giving you different advice by starting a new thread.:-).The strength of the concrete is irrelevant if the paving won't fit under the gates and you can't mount it higher so it misses them then you're screwed. You're going to need a bed at least 20mm deep but realisically it should be twice that to make bedding easier and to negate the different sett depths. Romex D1 is the lowest grade you could use gravel wil destroy the brush in stuff but personally I'd slurry point it it'll only cost you a tenner and be stronger than any resin stuff.

Thanks pablo, I took on board your last reply,Thankyou. I posted again as after reading some of the archives i was not sure if mortar fixing was strong enough. it seems you always lay on a sand bed. Whats a slurry pointing mate
cheers

A slightly wet 4:1 sand cement mix will be fine there's no need to bother with any greater adhesion because the pointing will hold everything in place. Don't have time to explain slurry just now but it's on the main site.
