Mini or micro digger private hire near derby

Hi
Does anyone know of companies hiring mini / micro (1.5t / 0.8t) diggers for 1 or 2 days in the Derby area? I was hoping to drive it myself but the companies I've tried only hire to businesses. Also what kind of price would it be?

I pay anywhere between 35-65 for micro's never paid more than 40 for a 1.5t digger. They wont hire it to you as you wont have hired in plant insurance if you are a private individual and possibly they will deem you to have zero experience driving their 10k plus digger!

I dont know of anyone on here near to you....there probs is, im just crap with directions and havent got a clue where derby is ha ha :p

You can get insurance per day, its not too expensive but have you tried hss hire? I think speedy hire do them too, they wont be the cheapest though. Your next best bet is to get a digger and driver. Maybe 200 ish but the guy will do more in a day than you will in 3, it does make sense

ditto what Dan said, i only really drive machines up to 5t, the fella i work with makes me look a right pleb on the 13 tonners

Thanks for the replies. I've seen a couple of local man+digger outfits near me quoting £150 per day inc VAT - makes sense as I've never used a mini digger before (how hard can it be )

I don't even try and compete with those guys the have a mini and very little idea. Actually operating them is easy, driving them and being efficient knowing your geology and positioning etc set us apart from them. I quoted for an Asian guy wanted basement digging out, I quoted for our 16 tonner, take week max. He got guy with a mini to dig it, guy dug himself into a hole and literally couldn't get out, was only about a metre deep and half size when he'd spent about what I'd quoted him to dig it out. guy had to get a crane to lift him out which is crazy as you can always dig yourself out.

My favourite is our 16 tonner, smooth powerful fast and get so much done, the 3 ton kubotas alright for a full days but I wouldn't want to spend 8 hours on a micro ohh

I know a chap who works for one of the big national tool hire companies and he was telling me that since the recession, tool hire theft has rocketed - mini diggers being the main target due to the value. Apparently, they end up in shipping containers going overseas before the hire company knows what is going on. That has made a lot of the hire companies stop hiring them out to individuals unless you're willing to give them a deposit - anywhere between 1k - 10k. To be fair, it's a pricey bit of kit to lose if the thief has only given you a couple of hundred for the hire.

i've rented minis on two occasions from two different companies:-

the first time round i had no experience ..... and rolled it on to its side.

the second time I had a little experience, a bigger machine and kept it upright.

to be honest unless you know what you doing with them, just hire one with a decent driver and go to digger land for the day and have a play.

i found a very good digger with driver for £150 a day (about two years ago). I was quite happy with the work we did both quality and quantity and have and will recommend him for any groundwork.

pretty sure I have posted about it on here before but here goes...



was in a rush, balanced it on a path, caught a tree root, pulled it over.

was quite lucky, you can see a 3"x3" post from the fence it fell on going up through the cab, that scraped my back! i didn't have my belt on and fell out the I don't know how the digger didn't fall on me and I broke the little bone at the end of my finger, on my weeding ring 6 weeks before my wedding.

really only caught the tree route because i was using the grading bucket, cause i couldn't work out how to change buckets!!
