going to be putting a step in soon, straight off the sub base that the patio will be going on around the step, got sandstone walling blocks to go round the edge, then I was just going to bed a flag on the top, should I be filling it with lean mix? the step will be breaching the DPC 150mm rule.

After the step I will be staring the patio, I am still undecided about pointing romex d1, sand and cement, gftk, flowpoint, easipoint etc. do I need to decided beforehand because it will make difference to how I lay the flags ie. buttering, joint depth etc.

shurely your step needs to be built on leanmix mikey?
never built a step off subbase yet
pointing the choice is yours ,but caveat emptor with polymerics
you know i like sand cement

I have adapted the flag on bricks step defined here by coming straight off the sub base and paving round the step to save on flags and to give the right height finish. I was just bit unsure about leaving a void under the step or not support the flag enough.

I'm not sure my back will survive the patio, so the idea of crawling around on my hands knees putting in the sand and cement doesn't appeal, however if the time and budget has disappeared, sand and cement it will be!
