The budget - What would you do?

The budget is coming soon.

We all like to have a moan after budget day. the best brains in the business ??? have been working on it to try and re-ignite the economy. What would you do if you were the chancellor???

I would be looking at small to medium businesses. Reducing corporation tax and incentivising them to employ by reducing paye costs which is basically a tax on employing people.

Also what are tax credits all about? Rather than give tax credits that people have to claim back why not just reduce thier tax by the value of the tax credit. Would make it much easier and less complicated for people to get what they are entitled to

after the rugby yesterday I'd shoot most of my Scottish countrymen because we're consistently proving how useless we are at just about everything. It'll save a fortune overnight and due to lack of business all the fast food outlets will close therefore making the rest of us healthier and placing less strain on benefits and the NHS.

I agree Steve, Tax credits just seem a waste of everybody's time, and your right about Helping small/medium business's, but I doubt they will. They could of helped by reducing VAT, that way getting more in by reducing people paying cash for jobs. Loads of people do it, and offer it, but if the VAT was lower, most people wouldn't bother, and they would still raise revenue. We were extra busy when it went down to 15%, what would it be like if it was say 7.5% or even 5%. 5% of something is better than 20% of nothing.
I don't bother employing my lad's, just have them in as sub-contractors, I can't afford too. They surely have to raise tax from those who can afford it, foreign investors, property owners, land owners and the top high earners. I know they threaten to pee off if they do, but should we have to live under this threat, it seems the Government wish the tax payers to pay for the f&@k ups of the financiers, as well as look after the expanding numbers of dependants we seem to be breeding.

i would lower benefits by 10%, up everything else by 0.5%

was it 700 billion paid out last year/ thats a 70 billion saving and some might go back to work

Most of the money from benefits is recycled into the excehequer straight away and to be honest there really aren't any "proper jobs" for those people receiving them to do anyway.

The problems killing our economy are global, structural and political and not something that can be radically affected by the Chancellors annual tinkering. Especially this Chancellor.

Any measures to help kick start businesses especially in manufacturing would be good and I'm with Mick in that the bluff should be called on all those who threaten to take their "wealth" elsewhere if they are to have a proper and proportional level of tax levied upon them.

I won't hold my breath though.

I read an interesting article recently, where a leading economist said that instead of seeking National growth and all the cuts associated, and competing with the new bigger guns, it would be better to simply try and get the economy to stabilize, even if it meant showing a slow down in growth for a few more years. To balance the books so to speak, instead of boom and bust all the time, just slow steady minimal growth, and to just get the basics right, for once.

Legalise marijuana, magic mushrooms, prostitution and tax them. That will free up a lot of prison space for the real criminals to stay there for life.
Mandatory 10 year prison sentence if you're carrying a knife.
Copy Australia's immigration procedure, we have too many immigrants here - Hall's meat producers here sacked their british staff and are advertising the positions in Warsaw.
Tell the EU to cram there ridiculous bureacracy, human rights laws etc.
Higher tax on imports, tax breaks for british manufacturers and people buying british products.
5% VAT for building industry.
Possibly pull out of afghanistan and Iraq, I say possibly because other leaders have said they would do it and nobody has I'm assuming there is something we're not privvy to. If we pull out there then send them to some dump that needs it like Sudan or Uganda.
Cap bankers and directors bonuses, don't give them unless they perform.
Make highers and university more difficult, too many people are getting these qualifications and devaluing them.
Much higher tax on alcohol and cigarettes.
Less funding for university, more for apprenticeships.
Ban Halal meat.
Put prisoners to work doing menial work. Same goes for anyone who wants their job seekers allowance to continue after 9 months or something.

Agree with everything in it apart from knife carrying but only cos I carry one nearly every day of my life! I say just imprison people for 20 years if they use them for violence!
