i had the chain come off a 066 with a 56" bar whip rd between my legs and catch the tree stump behind, i had kevlar chaps on but boy was i glad it hit that stump, doubt id have had my little boy if it had kept coming
he must have been working very close to his face, i find it hard to believe it kicked from waist level to head height, unless he wasnt holding it using it one handed and it wasnt a top control saw?
hope the brake was adjust correct so the actual chain wasnt running, poor guy hope your mate bought him a food processor

any kind of saw is dangerous including our own sweet stihl saws
my old scud stroudy took the tips of 3 fingers off, when his missus called him for tea as he was cutting skirting with a chop saw, briggsy's labourer passed him a stihl on a roof and gave him 17 stitches in the calf
and dunc the electricain tried changing the augur on his drill while it was till plugged in :O
skin came off his fingers like tissue when he knocked the trigger
its everywhere fellas

That sounds horrendous for your tree guy's mate...
The most dangerous machine at college wasn't the circular saw that you gave big respect. Was the bench planer, that looked so innocuous - took this very pretty girl's thumb clean off - will never forget her sitting calmly with it, wrapped in a hankie, reading a book, waiting for the ambulance.

They replaced her thumb with her big toe. That pretty girl was none other than Megan Fox.
