we get our special customer agreement from travis every year runs to about 8 pages of discount, underground drainage at 85% off for most stuff, timber at -50% a metre etc then some stuff at full whack but we do a lot with them. we dont have to quote any agreement just the account and it all gets worked out fine, establishing good relations with a branch is always a good idea, our local independent BM redmoor in new mills, we always go out its way to help us as we always over them the opportunity to beat travis price, ie give them their quote and see what they can do. they'll always drop us a bulk bag off etc even if full booked up for the day,

£230 for an 8 wheeler load is very cheap. Lads up there must be delivering it for the fun of it.

I use Burdens almost exclusively, if time allows I always try and price check with Keyline, they are always much more expensive - for example S100 Aco drainage, Keyline were nearly double the price!

yellow pages under sand and gravel. ring them all till best price is acvhived. Don't buy crushed concrete from a supplier it will be sh1t full of bags, rebar timber cable pram wheels etc. you should be able to get limestone type for close to the same money in bulk.

Offerton Sand and Gravel's Crushed Concrete MOT is pretty good. Had 8 tons the other week and was only a sand bags worth of crap I had to pull out. They run it through a seperator/washer so its not full of soil, tarmac, rebar, plastic, timber etc.

Compacts really well too, good mix of big stuff and fines.

I think that's who the OP has had a quote off.

parishpaver is right, I did get the price from the Offerton Sand and Gravel's website.

The two times I have used them, provided I ring up by mid afternoon they have not failed to deliver the same day. There drivers are very helpful in unloading a bug where I want it, over the top of a wall etc. (But we are 10 minutes up the road from them)

I talked to their driver last time, and he said that even if we had a “loose� deliver then can unload where we want with the grab and are happy to unload in more than one location.

However they do seem pricey if I need more than one or two bugs of something, hence my question about where people get bulk loads etc.

There compost is a bit expensive so I have two 1.5T loads coming from fairfieldcompost on Monday.

we've delt with osg for 20 years their crushed concrete is ok, but there crusher run is shocking but it is £100 a 20 load so cant complain but its all brick, breeze, wood plaster etc, offerton take clean loads of concrete for free. there lowest grade soil is funny more brick glass and shit then soil.

as for aggregates we get it direct from the quarries or through travis bulk aggregates who are actually cheaper than direct......

we have cemex at dove holes and waterswallows only 6 miles up the rd so lots of quarries plus we have a sandstone quarry at chinely only 3 miles away

When I used to work over your way,(not been for a couple of years) I always liked to deal with Des at Cheadle skip hire, he keeps the best MOT1 I have used and Marshalls grit sand which compacts like Bell Iron. Will deliver in bulk bags, in a skip or a grab and really geared up for pavers.

To me service and quality is way more important than price alone

i would rather pay £2 a tonne more if its delivered when i want it and its top notch gear

We got our crusher working on Friday. We produced about 10 tons of fill in the space of a couple of hours going at a leisurley working pace. Very nice grade as well. Will post some pics on Monday
