a helpful person who lurks here emailed me and suggested bar keepers friend and a househould kitchen sponge.
dan, i tried that site, but they do not sell anything. shame cos a galvanised cleaner would be good.
Seems that its an acid, or wire wool and a cleaner then!

dave, would a polishing mop not get ripped on the raised part of the chequer plate?

No, it shouldn't do - we polished some the exact same way. Depends how "rough" the checkerplating is but aslong as you do it in the 'direction' of the plating I think you'll be fine.

Brillo pads Â£1 and a good furious wrist action should do it fine!

Dan, most commercial stainless steel works use bar keepers friend for polishing up. use it once mate and you wont ever go back :p
