HI anyone, July last year we had a gravel driveway done, but now it looks horrible there are ruts in it & the mud is coming through & there are big lumps in it along the ruts, (where it has channeled).The drive is 8x9 metres (72 square ft)
We have had the person round who done the driveway ( he is a friend of my dads, my dad used to work with him)anyway he reckons that he told my dad that he said not to use type 1 but to use limestone instead because it was better or to concrete it ( I have read the forum about concrete).
I asked my dad what it was dug out to.
It was dug out 6 inches (150mm) then filled with about 2 inches (50mm) at most of type 1 (I think it was about 10 ton) my dad said at this stage that it looked thin ( he told me tonight that he could still see the mud in some places) but the men who done it said it would be ok! Then they put gravel on top.the gravel is big stones not pea shingle ( I suppose they are about an inch round?)
Anyway both the men are coming back in the week to look at it, but my dad still says that they did not put enough type 1 down to start with.
The man said that type 1 doesn't go off (set) is this true?
Is there any difference between type 1 & limestone, which is better?
What do you think they would have to do to correct this?

If they've dug out 150mm, and you still want the large gravel, in my opinion they would need to remove the gravel and lay and thoroughly compact approx. 110mm of Type 1. They should then lay the gravel to about 40mm depth and compact again.
I would personally use 10 or 14mm gravel and lay the gravel to a depth of 25mm. If you opt for this the type 1 would be 125mm deep.
Type 1 doesn't set but it does compact to a very solid base.
Type 1 can consist of crushed limestone. Did the 'base' which he put down have fines(dust)as well as solid pieces of stone?
