Hi
I am intending of having driveway relaid as its a mixture of concrete sections laid over 40 years ago so its in need of replacement.
The problem I have is that I have a 200 year old copper beech tree about 1m from my drive with a preservation order!
Can anyone advise what is the best driveway material to use that will reduce the chance of the tree roots cracking the new laid drive? Is block paving best or the imprinted concrete?
Thanks
Adam

Not impinted, it will eventually crack under the pressure, for my money i like block paving because it can be taken up, and relaid, this may need doing every 4 or 5 years but is an hours work and simple to do. We could tell you how to diy it with ease, You could also consider an underground tree barrier to block the roots a little

A mate of a mate of mine had a similar problem with a tree preservation order stopping a drive being laid because of one certain huge old tree. One winter evening some vandals stripped the tree of all its bark. In the spring permission from the local council was given to remove the tree as it was dyeing and causing a potential hazard if it were to fall or loose branches. The local council was keen to investigate into the bark stripping vandals but nothing ever came of it, and the driveway was laid as the customer wished. I’m not advising you to go killing trees tho!

A couple of developers down here just got prosecuted for the same sort of tree damage. Although their motives were a bit different.

as much as I like earning I hate cutting trees down
If the tree was there when you moved in leave it be
I would say a timber edging with type 1 and 20mm shingle
permeable and all the movement in the world cannot hurt the drive
the drive we just did had 3 trees closer than a metre according to the designer
following dig dug dan's advice we kept 1500mm away and still found odd roots 25mm wide only 300mm down
true block paving can be repaired but the only " hours work" in my world is on the throne :;):
