Water under floorboards - Source? remedy?

Foul and surface water, private drains and public sewers, land drains and soakaways, filter drains and any other ways of getting rid of water.

Having recently looked under the floorboards, we have a considerable amount of water underneath the whole house. A month or so ago we thought it was due to rain water through the airbricks. However the level of water is still there if not even more worse and has a stagnent awful smell to it. Can someone please advise if this could be a damaged drain causing this? To point out the ground is heavy clay however this problem hasn't existed before. We used to have two small trees in relatively close proximity to the house which were cut down last year is it also a possibility this has had some impact. An experts advice would be greatly appreciated we are obviously concerned for the well being of the foundations and are worried about financial costs to prevent this matter!!! Many thanks - kimdamo@yahoo.co.uk

First thing to do is to get hold of a pump (or a bowl and bucket chain) and empty out the water, and see if it comes back. Any standing water will go stagnant after a while, its more worrying if it doesn't as that means you have an underground water course. We have had some exceptional weather lately, and it might just be temporary flooding.

Didn't we have a thread just like this some time last year, Jon?

To Damian - posting your email address on a public website is really, really, really daft. Where do you think the spamming bastards get their mail lists from??
