Hi all, I am paving the back paths for a guy, which he want me also to pave the fron drive. His local build centre has advised him, to excavate down to sub grade, then lay 14mm clean, compact, then 6mm clean, compact, then start the screeding process. I have never heard of this process, am I missing something as a new way of doing things.

who the feck are "local build centre"
a collection of half wits and ne'er do wells trying to flog him unnecessary gear
excavate to subgrade
use non woven fabric
then 150mm of type1 compacted to 125mm is a pretty much standard spec for domestic jobs
if he does it there way there will be a lot of voids in the subbase

These idiots out there giving wrong advice drive me up the wall, they are a menace and all they do is confuse people and cause trouble.
Your spot on loudog, your customer will think you are trying to pull a fast one. If you need any back up send the customer on to this site.
Also send the guy on who's giving out the crap advice, he needs a bit of BC education

Find out which product they sell there and have a read of the manufacturers laying recommendations, see if they match up.
I think you guys have all gotten the wrong end of the stick. When I first read the post I thought they were recommending laying 20mm sub base, but now that I have read it again I think they are saying whatever depth of 14mm clean aggregate for the sub base, then whatever depth of 6mm clean aggregate for the bedding layer.
Type 1 is no good for permeable paving because of all the fines in it.
