Of reputable company's in the monoblock / driveway business ,I'm also asking in this thread what the depth of the dig should be to prepare for the type 1 and wether a g-tex membrane should be used under the sand level prior to the laying of the blocks ), ( I'm a newbie here so go gentle )

225-240mm below finished height.
150mm type 1
50mm block
25-40mm sharp sand.

No need for membrane under the sand, if you're going to use it then stick it under the type one and it is worth using one just because relatively speaking it costs bugger all.

Thank's for your advice , on another note would a waterproofing coating add to the lifespan of a newly laid drive or are there any downfalls of using one ?

Would 225mm of type 1 ( compacted ,done in two loads,ie 100mm compacted then 125mm compacted )
then 25mm compacted sand
then the 50mm blocks

be just as good ,or any better , is 50mm of sand not liable to leave a lot of room for movement ? ( sorry to harp on )

It would but it is unnecessary. 150mm will support any domestic vehicles you can throw at it and light commercial so not much point in paying for removing more muck and paying for more hardcore for very little benefit.

I aim for less sand rather than more, with a minimum of 25mm. If you pass over your sand once with the vibration plate before screeding, set the height of your blocks right then pass over them in 8 directions (up, down, left, right, both diagonals in both directions) then they won't go anywhere.

Both my contacts through that way are of no use, the first guy, Alex, has just went out the game and the other has broke his leg after coming off a bike. Ouch!
