I'm a garden designer working for a client who is using her house builder and architect to manage the hard landscaping. I've specified hoggin or another self-binding gravel (subject to colour check) graded to 95% max 20mm particles. This is for a small pathway in the garden, and a washing line area. The builder is asking if he can use a 'hoggin' graded to 40mm particles - is this likely to be satisfactory?
Advice appreciated! thanks.

my alarm bells are ringing. It's very rare to see a house builder make even a half decent stab at landscaping. Mostly their eye is on using the cheapest materials and labour and getting it done too quickly. Also they usually add 20% for their troubles meaning the client doesn't get good value or a good job.ogp wrote:using her house builder and architect to manage the hard landscaping.
Can't see it from my house

if you want a house building, you don't ring a landscaper!!

Thanks for the advice! The garden is tiny, and a certain amount of landscaping was included as part of the overall quote from the builder before I was involved in the design. He's asking a lot of questions, I think he's keen to do a good job, and the architect is knowledgeable about gardens, so I hop we'll be OK.
But re the hoggin size, thanks for the advice!
