Laying flags 2 free edges...how to screed bedding? - How to get a level bedding layer?

Hi,

I'm going to re-bed all the slabs on a raised patio area in my back garden as they have come lose and very uneven. The slabs start against the house, run for 4.5 slabs and finish as a step down onto the lawn area. The last slab overhangs the step by around an inch. i have attached a picture.

I am going to remove the slabs, rake off the old bedding layer and re-lay a new bedding layer consisting of a 10:1 dry mix before replacing the slabs. My problem is that as i dont have any edging, how will I be able to pre-compact the bedding layer and screed to get it all level? I don't see how I can screed the bedding layer if i dont have any edging to use as my screed guide. Also when i re-lay the slabs at the step overhang side, I was planning to do it onto a layer of mortar the depth of the brick step.

Any help as to how i should go about this most appreciated.

PUT A BLOCK ON THE SCREED BEAM AT THE RIGHT DISTANCE TO SIT ON THE BRICK AND SCREED LEAVING THE TOP OF THE BRICKS CLEAN ,THEN BED THE FREE EDGE ON TO A STRONG MIX MOTAR 3:1

Thanks Mizimad, I'll do that on the step end of patio. What should I do to get a level on the other side against the house?

You're going about laying the flags all wrong your flags are to thin to lay on a screeded bed. It's very difficult to lay the flags like that and not get lots of rockers because you have to stand on the freshly laid flag or the bedding and then they end up all over the place. Also a thin flag like that should be bonded to the bedding so you should be laying them individually on a full bed of wettish 6-1 mortar.
