Hi all,
Newbie here and no very little about building! Great site by the way and very very informative. I am planning a new driveway and reading some of the horror stories on here I am now petrified and am thinking of doing the job myself (good or bad idea?) The current drive is tarmac and is only wide enough for a single car, I would like to make this wider so am looking at width of 6.25m by length 8.5m so would be roughly 53sqm ( I think). As the brother in law is the Manager of Jewsons I can get a reasonable discount on materials. But saying that I am happy to find a good contractor that will do the work if I can supply the Materials. Being in the Cumbernauld area I have seen some drives done on my estate and one of my neighbours drive has started to sink after 2 years and the contractor is not interested!! If anybody could reccomend a Good contractor I would be all ears.
Yours hoping
Steve O

Most contractors do a decent job and are professionals in their trade. As usual it is only the 'horrer' stories that get the publicity, the good jobs that are carried out on time and well do not make for such good stories.
To believe you can take on and do a job for the first time, with no experiance, without all the right gear, and do a better job than most genuine contractors is a bit insulting to the trade.
Whilst finding the right firm is the key to a quality job and the difficult bit they are about, but be prepared to pay a decent price for a decent job.
Hopefully Tony can source a recommendation in your area.

Hi Gents,
In answer to Tony's question postcode is G68
Im amswer to your reply Ability, I think you may have taken my comments too literally. I was not knocking the trade but as two guys on my estate have bad jobs done and the Contractors have not been the least bit interested in rectifying their mistakes (both to do with the laying of kerbs neither is bedded properly in fact one is sitting on sand and they have pushed up dirt form the garden to secure the kerbs and guess what it has started to subside!) you can understand why I am a bit mythed with the whole process. I am an electrician by trade and totally agree with your fair job fair price policy and there are just as many John Waynes in my business.
Thanks again for you comments though.
Steve
