I have received a labour only price to install 90m2 of rmc tumbled paving 150 x 150 x 60. However I have now changed my mind and decided to use all three sizes 225,150,112.5 x 50. But my installer is asking me for more money by saying it is quiker to lay one size block than mix a pattern of three sizes.
Can any of you experts out there comment on this or am I dealing with one of the last remaining cowboys in the South East.

Many thanks for your anticipaeted help on the matter.

It will take slightly longer to lay 3 different sizes than just the 1, but not a lot longer. You have to pull from 3 different pallets and keep an eye on the random pattern - making sure you dont use too many of 1 size.

It depends on the increase of cost from your contractor. Somewhere in the region of £1 -£2 per m2 would more than suffice for that size of area.
A lot of contarctors would absorb the extra time incurred anyway.

Dont be bullied into paying over the odds. The contractor should take no more than 2 days to actually lay the blocks - so I am sure he will have a little extra time to do the different sizes.

Good luck

I agree with Nigel. It's no real effort to lay 3 sizes as opposed to one. On a 90m² job, maybe an extra hour or two at most. I wouldn't offer mlre than a ton, and I know most contractors would just do it for no extra, anyway, as it's such a trivial matter.

If you were changing the blocks completely - using, say, a 200x100 45º herringbone rather than offset stretcher course tumbled blocks, - then it would be fair enough for the contractor to claim a bonus payment, but for this? I think they're trying it on!
