Cleaning stone flags in basement

Patio flagstones (slabs), concrete flags, stone flags including yorkstone and imported flagstones.

We have a stone-flagged floor in the basement which I am trying to clean. I think the previous owners used it as a workshop as there is oil/paint on some of the flags and they are generally very dirty. Can you advise me what would be best to add to the water for cleaning, please?

There are a few chemicals ie acids that will clean yorkstone but they will not effectivley clean off paints and oils, if i were you i would scrub a soap water mix over the stone and then wire brush the stuborn stains until clean, if this fails then repeat the process with a mild brick acid solution.

Paints need a paint remover/stripper to dissolve them. Oils are more of a challenge and if they've been ingrained for some time, it's quite likely that you're stuck with them. It's not so much the oil that makes the stone look dirty, but the crap that's carried in the oil as it penetrates the stone that can be impossible to shift. Hot, soapy water is the safest thing to use, but don't expect miracles.
