When the tarmac is removed, what is normally done? It is usual to and replace the entire sub-base or is it usual to use the existing sub-base? What is the pitfall of using the existing sub-base?
depends on what the subbase is! normally if it is type one, its scraped up to one side, the drive dug out, and its re-sued, but it will still have to be topped up.
One of my neighbours had his tarmac removed and they blocked straight over the sand on top of the un prepared subbase. you should see sink marks, and the slips and darts!
needless to say i was not asked to quote as he thought i didn't do that sort of work!

100 a metre for tegula with kerbs etc ,but charging £100 per metre for blocks that cost £9.99 a metre seems a little steep
mind you i need £70 a mtre for bog standard blocks now
thats what it costs
LLL
When you say 70 a metre are you guys including kerbing, drainage etc in that price?
pricing by the metre is totally mad in my opinion, as dan asks, and i know the anwer is it doesn't!
it depends on the block, the amount of ground to dig out, access, drainage, block type etc. etc.

It's a crazy way of pricing because you get bitten when you have to dig out more, cart away more, cut radius, miter cuts, manhole recess trays, find services!! It's ok to give estimates on first visit as you know if they call back they are not like the majority of time wasters who want quality work for pikey prices and you can quote more detailed an accurately then. I have worked my bolloxs out for wages for to long now so I have increased my prices latley and I've heard nothing from 7 jobs and only 1 got back to me (a friend ) and asked for me to quote cheaper materials I ain't budging on labour tho! I'd rather sub contract or go back on site as dealing with some private clients just dont pay.......
a lot of pavers are leaving the game
if i was paving alone i would be bust now
the last 3 years have been appalling for hardscapers
thank god people are still refurbing their houses

It's not all doom and gloom in the paving game I hope LLL , as I'm gonna step up my advertising in much more affluent areas from now on and the higher the quality job the more I'm motivated P.M.A.!!!
i wish you well hag . i have had my boards up in an affluent area of essex for 4 weeks now . done two jobs , both across road from each other. have not had one phone call off them . both jobs in back . people arent spending.
put my cards up in the area where the only way is essex is from in shops etc . not one phone call off them either . only word of mouth is keeping me going . the big wooden beadle/beetel might have to come back out soon .
we are pricing more and more work for the LA,at least they have the money to pay
one of the best block paving firms in bedfordshire has upped and emigrated to OZ,had enough of 2-3 days a week
the thing i have noticed is that the little PJs just dont happen anymore,i always used to have something on the go
so now i just concentrate on attention to detail for affluent customers
chipies got a rollocking today, they were told to pitch a roof at 15 deg, when i checked it they had done it at 16.5 deg
not a big difference but over 6 metres that made it 133mm too high and messed up all the leadwork,
i wont accept near enough and i wouldnt expect the customer too either
keep your standards high and it will come good
