How good is, The Beckoning Silence?!!DNgroundworks wrote:Me too im more into non-fiction, thats why i like Bill Bryson and Joe Simpson
Brilliant and quite harrowing at the same time.
The White Spider by Heinrich Harrer is a classic about the Eiger if you enjoyed BS.
A couple of my fav's are,
The Last King of Scotland by Giles Foden, (knocks spots of the film, and that is pretty good!)
City Of God by ?
Marching Powder by Rusty Young
Bringing Down the house by Ben Mezrich
Into Thin Air Jon Krakauer
Any reccomendations for Non fiction in return???
Cheers
JD

ive read all of joe simpsons, simon yates's, and into thin air, also white spider is a legendary piece of writing, i got into the mountaineering literature after reading joe simpsons "touching the void" about 4 times, really inspiring stuff.
I take it your a mountaineer? Id love to do some training and take it up.

Agreed The White Spider is a suberb bit of writing I also liked Dark Shadows Falling by Simpson and Mountains of the mind by Robert Macfarlane. The only autobiography I've ever been able to read was General Peter Jacksons I've given up on Tony Blairs just now because I feel it's not truthful and is more about self exoneration than telling the story. Doug Scott wrote some good stuff but Bonnington is dull reading. My favourite book is 100 years in the Highlands by Osgood Mackenzie. He's the fella that started the world famous gardens at Inverewe by Gairloch in the mid 1800's and it covers his day to day life as a laird/ fisherman/ hunter and botanist. He makes observations about the weather and yearly cycle of life that are fascinating are quite humourous. He calls himself a conservationist but after seeing a Black grouse for the first time in 10 years he's really chuffed that he shot it with one round and got it mounted in a glass case.LOL. Monty Don has witten a few good reads Bear Grylls book about crossing the Atlantic in a RIB is terrifying. There's a good book about a fella hitching around Ireland with a fridge for a dare a quick google will find his name.
Can't see it from my house
