Pavers on 'spongy' soil? - No sub-base

Hi guys, great idea for a forum…first post.
I have a problem. I’ll try and keep it short and concise
I had a blocked drain, I lifted an area of pavers at drain about 2 Mtrs square to repair.
Lifted pavers, dug out sand and then soil down to drain. (No sub-base for sand and pavers)
Fixed drain and reversed the above process with the aid of a vibrating plate.
My problem is that the area directly above the excavation is very ‘spongy’ to walk on.
Feels like pavers are on jelly.
The area was very wet, so…will it dry out and solidify or will it need to be addressed with a sub base.
Remember there was no sub base previously and was fine before we dug it up.
There is a lot more pavers laid right round the house with the same spec (I’m guessing) and it’s all solid and flat.

Any thoughts would help this novice.

You should excavate again , remove unsuitable spoil and back fill arround drainage with dust and then compact with sub-base, bed your paving on cement and sharpe sand mortar. as for the rest of your paving this may also fail in time so fingers crossed!

Never ever backfill with wet material. How deep is your drainage to crown of pipe? If it is not deep enough you may have to surround in concrete, if it is deep enough use shingle.

Looks like I will dig all the wet stuff out and put in a base of hard core to lay the sand base for pavers.

One last question...the pipe below is upvc drain pipe.
What do I put directly above this ...I kinda bedded it all in (under and sides) with what we in Scotland call 'peas'. should I completely burry it in 'peas'

It depends on what peas they are....mushy, garden etc i expect ???
