Thats what i was told- angle iron... but i was unsure what it was and what to do with it???

It's a sheet of metal that was flat but heated up and then bent to 90 degree angle. It is ideal to use in your situation, as both a lintel and backing to stop debris entering the manhole.

so how would i lay it- have one side flat against the shared drive the other flat on the bricks?

Sorry m8 just having the crack. yes as you describe, lay on the bricks with the angle flat against the manhole. another option is to run an edging along the existing concrete and level with it, then your edging bricks to the fall. good luck you can do it.
