surely with only one slip collar theres going to be gap of at least 50mm somewhere. how ever much you have to push it in, will be the amount of gap. for the price of a another collar its a no brainer. i have made my own slip collars in the past.

So have I.......and what a pain in the ass it is filing that stop-ridge out!!!!!

Surely there will be a gap somewhere if you cut a section of pipe out longer than the junction ?.

Its easier to insert 170mm section of pipe in the upstream collar on the junction so you have a spigot at both ends, then cut the pipe accurately and drop the junction in before sliding the couplings onto the spigots.

Surely the only way to do it the way Giles has shown without generating a 50mm or so ragging point is the excavate the pipe until it can be 'skewed' out of the line to enable fitment of the coupling in a parallel plane to the line, then reseat it back down and create the final [accurate] cut?

Obviously a lot more work............

Amount of time doesn't come into it. Do it once, do it right. Anything other than two sliding couplers and spigots is just a bodge. Drainage, you need to take care over because it is so expensive to put right.
