I've just had a quote for some slabbing in the back yard of my terrace house. The area is about 21m2. There is currently a large concrete slab on a slightly raised area at the back of the garden near the wall which is about 4m2 in size. There is also a path and a mud bank that is about 75cm wide by 4m. What the guy is proposing is to remove the slab, lower half of the back garden so that it becomes level with the concrete path at the back of the house. You can sort of see the area here. The picture is big, forgot to shrink it before I uploaded. Sorry. The guy has said £1800 to remove everything, and slab the area in blue grey slabs of three different sizes. Or it was £1500 if I paid by cash even though he's vat registered. It explains the big mercedes people carrier that he drove up in. He said the work would take two days. Is this the price that I should be looking at for getting that sort of work done? I am going to get more quotes.

The price all depends on type of flags used, ground conditions, access and a number of variables, however at first glance this seems to be about right for this sort of job. (roughly £60 + vat laid in this part of the country).

Like Alan, I'd want some clarification on the type of 'slabs' being proposed. Also, I always recommend you get at least 3 quotes for the work, just to see what sort of rates are being asked locally. 1800 quid for just 21m² seems a bit pricey, but it depends on how much cart away and prep work is needed.

Alan's guide price of 60 quid per square metre is about right for Leicester, too, so that would suggest a price closer to 1200 quid + VAT (1400 quid inclusive)
