I want to have my concrete driveway replaced with penta block paving of which I already have the blocks. The total area to be worked is 38 square metres.
Two thirds of the driveway is mostly on a 15 degree angle then is cut off by a flow away concrete gutter. Then the last third is level ground.

I have been quoted £770.00 for the groundwork and £900.00 just to lay the paving.

Does this seem expensive and if so could someone recommend a company that could do this in the Essex area?

Thanks.

1670 quid for 38m² seems a bit too cheap to me - it's only 44 quid per m². What's the catch?

I don't do recommendations unless I know the company personally and would be happy to have them work for me. Essex isn't my patch, maybe some of the other Brew Cabin Irregulars can help.

Tony as you don't have enough to do already ???

It would be cool if one could have dollars vs quid etc. mayby in your Units pull down chart which I use all the time. Great add on. I would love to compare prices, I guess the exchange rate would make it vary, but still be usefull
Thanks

The catch is I already have the blocks bought and paid for.
So is this a good price just just for the labour?

Do you also have the base material, the cart away or skips, the bedding sand, the compo for edges and the silica.
If you are providing ALL the materials then this is a labour only price.
And then there is of course the tackle involved, or are you providing this as well, digger if required, mixer, wacker plate, cutter etc etc.

The trouble with having a currency conversion is that, unlike metres and yards, there is no fixed and permanent relationship between the two. A quid might be $1.80 one week and $1.70 the following week. And then what do I do about Euros, as used by most of our Irish reader, as well as those in continental Europe. And Canadian dollars, Australian dollars, shekels, bahts, rupees, krone, pesos....it's a never ending task.

There's an online currency info site I use when going back to Ireland or when I'm offering advice to non-sterling countries - I'll see if they have a 'ticker' service that could be incorporated into the Units Conversion pop-up.

Tony,
Thanks for the reply.
Very good point on the currency conversion. I was not thinking in global terms, but your right on the complexity.
Maybe I can find a sourse of info. I realize the changing rates would be a problem. I need to do a little study to get a rough idea of how your currency compare to US $.
The units pop up chart is great, I use it a lot.
Thanks,
LM

All of the materials for the groundwork are being supplied in the groundwork quote of £770.00 that includes taking everything away. I do not have the wacker plate or the cutter required. Due to the dimensions ( 3.3M wide by 15.5M long) of the driveway the cutting has been kept to a minimum as the penta blocks lay without the need for cutting along the 15.5 metres, only the fineline blocks will need cutting along this edge. The driveway is cut off by a flow away concrete gutter 2/3rds down but that is staying.

I am trying to determine if £900.00 to lay my driveway with blocks supplied by myself onto ready prepared groundwork is a good price.

Thanks for your guidance :;):

900 quid is 23.70 per square metre. If that's a Labour Only price, it's a bit on the expensive side. If it includes jointing sand and bedding sand, then it's more realistic. As a Labour Only price, I'd expect 750-800 quid to be about right for that part of the country.

In contrast, 770 quid for all the groundworks, including cart-away seems too cheap. 38m² should generate around 8 cubic metres of spoil, which is around two skips full. Reckon on 150 quid for a skip and that's 300 quid straight away. Then you've sub-base: you'd need 8-12 tonnes, at around 18-20 quid per tonne (even more if it's bought in Big Bags). That's at least another 200 quid, giving a total of 500 for materials, leaving only 270 quid for labour and profit. I don't think many contractors would be able to put men and machines on site to excavate, cart away and stone-up around 40 square metres for a mere 270 quid!
