Is my contractor installing channel drain right?

Foul and surface water, private drains and public sewers, land drains and soakaways, filter drains and any other ways of getting rid of water.

I need to install a channel drain in my new driveway. Going to use the heavy duty plastic ones. Any suggestions on installation? From what I've read it needs to be installed with rebar with 4" of concrete under it. It this the only way to go? My contractor has it set on a base of sand, no rebar. I don't think this is correct. Help driveway going in soon!!

You are using heavy duty plastic channels. Are these the ones with grids on top about 1m in length.

These need to be laid on a 75mm-100mm base of concrete - not just sand. No need for rebar. The channels should be about 100mm in depth. They need to be haunched with the concrete about one third up the sides to hold them in place.

The finished paving should finish about 5mm above the channels.

You won't need rebar on this sort of installation unless your building a lorry park or a freight yard.

As luck would have it, I've just uploaded some new pages covering the installation of a linear channel to a residential driveway. Have a read and see if they help...but I can tell you now that laying them directly onto sand triggers my Cowboy Detector.

Just noticed from Julia's profile that she is a Dallassian and therefore the methods and materials we use here in Britain and Ireland are of no use to her.

Julia - you'd be better off seeking advice for a US Contractor, as your country does things differently to the rest of the world.
