Which gravel? - Deciding on the best gravel

Setts and cobbles, tarmac, asphalt, resin systems, concrete whether it's plain, patterned or stencilled, gravels, etc.

Hi guys,

I'm doing my 1st driveway at my 1st home. I am digging down about 7" to add a 6" Type 1 base and then will finish off with a 1"ish covering of gravel. The drive is around 100m2.

I'm after a hard wearing gravel that will not break down quickly and is dark in colour - blacks and reds maybe.

The current thin layer of gravel I have that sits on top of polythene and soil lol !!! is a round variety and hence never really knits together and is always loose???

What gravels should I consider / avoid

Many thanks
Steve

Thanks for the replies,

Why avoid the 20mm gravel? Is it advisable to mix gravel sizes to reduce it rolling?

ideally your gravel would be angular so it interlocks better
but the main thing is not to have the gravel too thick
all one size is normally best

Ok cheers.

I've found some red granite listed on some web sites - I like the look of this - angular and hard wearing - anyone ever tried it?
