Laying blocks on sand - advice needed!!

Can anyone advise on the best way to lay blocks on sand. The site here states that the preferred method is to screed all of the sand level before laying the blocks. However I have witnessed contractors laying the blocks on small areas of screed sand and then moving backwards across the sand, screeding as they go and then laying the blocks.

Also,is it best to lay out all of the sand and compact it or can this be done peacemeal as well??

I always screed the entire area in one go if I am able to lay all the blocks in one go. This makes the job of putting the blocks down faster as you do not have to keep stopping to screed more sand. If you had no chance of finishing the area in one attempt, ie stopping over night ,then some one would probably walk over your nice area of screeded sand. Therefore there is not much point in doing the entire area.

I would give the same answer about compacting the sand

Whether you screed the entire area or do it in smaller, manageable sections, is up to you. Normally, we would screed an area that we could expect to cover with blocks in half-a-day. So: we'd prepare one screed in the morning, then pave it; have our dinner, then prepare another screed for the afternoon shift.

There's no great advantage to screeding HUGE areas as the longer the screed remain exposed, the greater is the risk that some eejit will walk across it, or a cat will take a dump in it.

If Contactors want to screed, say, 10m² at a time then lay the blocks and then screed another small area, that's up to them, but it seems like a lot of effing about to me. It makes more sense to screed off a manageable area then put aside the screed bars and floats and other tools while you concentrate on laying the blocks for a couple of hours or so.
