Nothing can tow 3.5t without a tacho,as you will be over 7.5t on a car licence ,MSH

i'm regularly towing a skid steer with two attatchments,with a combined weight of around 9 tonnes. the towing vehicle is a disco3.
i only do this on back roads,when its quiet, obviously!
the trailer is a brian james plant trailer,with a max payload of 3.5 tonnes,so even if i use a 18tonner to tow it,the skid with attatchments is too heavy.
anyone recommend a legal but cost effective towing solution?

A 7.5 toner with a plant body on it,
The towed trailer cannot exceed the weight of the towing vehicle. So your struggling to tow anything close to 3.5 ton with anything other than truck or the like f the big iveco vans or 814 style merc vans.
There was a big article in earth movers the other week about towing. Even they with Vosa and dot etc coudnt really explain the laws. I'll grab it out the brew room tomorrow and scan it .
And the tachometer thing is not entirely true as there exceptions like operating with 60 miles of base where the drivers main job is using the good carried not driving. And any work in the utilities sector is excempt from requiring a tachometer for towing.
We no longer move our 3 toner on a 3.5 ton plant trailer it's ramps on wagon or tractor trailer,

DN a quick Google of the manufacturers websites would have the answers you need. Bobbi a trailers weight rating includes the trailer itself so a 3.5 tonner could carry about 2 3/4 tons to weigh 3.5 ton gross. A disco weighs less than 3 ton how do you fit over 6 ton on that trailer without it collapsing. Thats crazy dangerous you could kill someone. A 7.5 tonner and plant trailer would carry all your gear legally. A beaver tail or tipper and skids would take between 3 and 3.5 ton and can tow a further 3.5 to 4.5 ton depending on configuration.

You'll be needing a C1+E Licence to tow a trailer >750kg behind a 7500kg gross wagon........
All these rules and regs I'm sure are out there to just confuse us types who are just trying to earn a pound.

i was thinking this could be the solution,as a single solution replacement for the skid steer with all my attatchments and the jcb airmaster,while being easy to transport around the country.
the kramer allrad has enough hydraulic power to power a patch planer,has a huge range of attatchments available,does 40kmh on the road and can apparently tow up to 8tonnes,anyone know much about them? the model i was thinking of was the 380,which is about 1900mm wide by 5m long and weighs about 5 ton

A landy 90 can haul 3.5 tons, but its not all about max gross weight. You cant exceed axle loadings on either the towing vehicle or the trailer, so you need to know how best to load your gear on your motor. And as far as i can make out, Giles you are right but wrong at the same time, aslong as you hold a B+E licence, or a higher entitlement, or held your license before January 1997, there is no vehicle/trailer ratio weight limits. I'd love one of those small Kramer shovels they'd be fantastic for stoning and sanding up and moving paving and soil. They're to slow to move to far by road though so would need to be towed most places that weren't to local. Also the cost of paying someone to drive it and the white diesel would make it more expensive than a skid steer and lorry. The other problem would be finding staff qualified to operate it. Lovely setup though.

unless you have a HGV licence you cannot tow anything other than a less than a 750kg trailer such as a single drum roller behind a 7.5t lorry, if you have HGV most 7.5t will gross train weight at 11t, i put my 3t digger on the back off the lorry and i'm correct weight tow it and i'm over gross train weigh MSH

My shogun will legally tow 3.5 ton. and we do move a 2.5t machine around on it with buckets etc. this is legal and vosa have checked me 3 times.. annoyingly the transit tipper twin wheel is far better for towing weight from a stability point of view but due to the fact that it isnt 4x4 means its capacity is far lower
bobbi o... you must be joking? thats a hefty fine if you get caught. not to mention my wife and kids could be driving the same back roads that you are using and you are risking the lives of all of them if you cant stop. seriously, the risk you are taking is massive and for what? a days money?
