100mm type 1 (recycled) is very wet - Help with wet type 1

I am laying a small area of gritstone setts. Have excavated 400mm and laying a sub base on a geo textile. The sub base is to be laid in two layers of 100mm of recycled MOT type 1. I have laid the first 100mm and compacted using a standard wacker plate. With the rain we have had over the last week is is sodden and spongy and there is a considerable amount of standing water on top of the type 1. (the sub grade is clay)

I am wondering if I should wait to lay the next 100mm until such time as the previous layer dries out, but this could be a months.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and may just stop a total disaster.

sounds flooded to me, you may need some drainage solution. Posting a pic could help to sort it out.

why would you use recycled type 1. anyway i would leave it and see if it dries out. you dont want any soft spots, dig them out and fill with proper type 1, 40mm down.

Thanks for your replies. The recycled type 1 if still compliant with 803 and is 35% cheaper, do you think it would have been different with the standard limestone type 1?

Does sound like a drainage issue but the old drive never suffered from any drainage problems, am guessing now that I have 4.2m wide hole that is 400mm deep and on clay, sort of asking for a swimming pool really.

What sort of drainage could be laid now? I guess that would mean pulling the 100mm type 1 up?

i just would'nt bother with recycled stone, for the small moneys you save its not worth it. think where you went wrong was when you had dug it out, you should of filled with type 1 straight away. i would dig it out and start again but thats easy for me to say because i dont have to do it. once you have the type 1 in and compacted the water should'nt penetrate in to much.
