lay terram over the excavated ground, lay 150mm crushed concrete or type one, compacted to levels.
Then lay the clay pavers on a mortar bed,(3-1 soft sand+ cement) jointing them as you go.
Hugely time consuming, but your brickie should be able to cope

if thats the look you want i would dig out at least 200mm lay 100mm type 1 mot lay your edges (RSJ :p ) and lay the paviours as setts on a semi dry bed and consolidate every one to a string line then romex it all but if you going to this much trouble buy some setts instead

lay 100mm to 150mm of type1 or semi dry concrete . compact with whacker to correct levels. lay pavers on sand and cement screed or mortaR(your choice). point up as you go or at end . (your choice).

For a pedestrian Patio 100mm of sub base is more than enough,

could the op lay the blocks on a dryish cement/sand mix to the correct levels then joint with a slurry mortar such as cempoint or romex etc.

boys your all getting excited bricklayer can lay and point pavours as he goes :;): but when laying pavingl for a living will need to move with the times ie sq wheel round wheel we all can learn and remeber :p :p ps a job done right is better than oh dear
