Giles,

We all know you do a quality job but lets be honest the last house you built was not your average 4 bed semi constructed to the NH BC minimum requirement.

he customer does have a choice, I don't understand where you get this from, if Mr and Mrs Jones wants tobermore or wickes paving then if i could not persuade them to choose something out of the Marshall's or Plaspave brochure then i would install this type of paving for them

this was mentioned on here some time ago, and you at the time agreed with me when i said this before. Are you now saying that you don't agree?

What is wrong with someone going on to marshals website, choosing a contractor, and then supplying bradstone woburn rumbled because the customer prefers it? why should the contractor be punished for this?

oh and another reason for avoiding marhalls (round here anyway) none of the big suppliers stock it anymore. Theire margins were too poor, so they give a better price on other prouducts. Travis bloody perkins is the only one left, and would never ever set foot in one again after they way they dealt with all previous marshalls orders from me.

I too seem to remember the posts about marshalls register pavers getting struck off if they laid another manufacturer's product?

And as dan correctly states down south I.E. this area very few BMs stock marshalls on price reasons

I like the stonemarket gear, but as i did when i saw a prospective client saturday i gave him 4 brochures from different manufacturers and take it from there,I like Bretts stuff too but never saw tobermore down here

we have been in the NHBC and the federation of master builders but other than take money they seem to do little else
at least gas safe and NIEC do come out and inspect work on a regular basis

IMHO any organisation for a trade should randomly inspect work and strike off contractors whose work is not up to scratch
most wait till something goes wrong then try and wriggle out of it

I have tried to search for the thread but I can't find it, all i am saying is after having conversations with the regional assessor that you will not be removed from the Marshall's register if you don't use Marshall's products on every job you do otherwise no one would be left on the register, if thats changed from my comment on the other thread then this is why

>>>>why should the contractor be punished for this?
this one is sticky ground in my opinion and down to the integrity of the contractor, all our direct contact details have been removed for our register profiles because of this issue due to contractors promoting other manufacturers products but the lead came from Marshall's

around our way its the same Dan with Travis Perkins being the main stockist, but in our favour Travis Perkins have just opened a large distribution dept with guaranteed next day delivery on large and small amounts of materials

I did have a problem with one dept manager not quite telling the truth and over charging but this got sorted out and the three Travis Perkins I use in my area now give a great delivery service and good prices

our work is assessed regularly, rather than waiting for a phone call from my assessor i will phone him and ask for an assesment

this one mickg?
i said it at the time and i still feel that if the lead comes from marshalls you should use their stuff,if its off your own back then use what you will

no its not that one Luton as I did not post on that thread

I have had site visits by Marshall's register staff and i explained when they phoned that i am not installing Marshall's products on the job your calling to see me at but was told its OK as they don't expect every job I do to be Marshall's products

I will certainly find out first thing tomorrow morning though whether this is true or not

i have been on the register for 10 years and use a lot of plaspave as well as marshalls you dont have to sell only marshalls stuff
but if they gave you the lead you do not try and sell that customer any one elses product
i have had regional assesors come out when i have been laying plaspave and they dont bother i think they would prefer it if you were laying marshalls but understand your not going to turn a job down because mrs smith wants plaspave

i feel that the yearly fee is worth it for the discounts just on direct loads and agree with mick g the register helps us all to get work and find they have a very good back up for problems etc ???

I spoke with my regional assessor and he confirmed what i already knew anyway....to quote his words " you will not be kicked off the Marshall's register for installing other companies products"

he also said if you receive a Marshall's lead and then cross sell it and use another paving companies product that is an issue and would be addressed but you would still not be kicked off the Marshall's register you just won't receive any more leads from Marshall's

now come on that more than lenient, if your going to bite the hand that feeds you whats the point of you being on the register in the first place

i have only met 2 of the regional assessors who cover the north west and north east area and they are both ex paving installers from building and paving backgrounds, they are 2 great guys who are up to speed on all aspects of paving

I don't know what the criteria is for applying for the job as a Marshall's register assessor so I can only assume the rest up and down the country are from similar backgrounds

I know a lot of blokes who assess and or teach brickwork never made the grade themselves, it would take a pedant to snag your work
