Just to add to the confusion - when I was over in the states this summer, couldn't get into to the BC - had same page as Carl posted - Tony let me know that the ip address I was coming from was responsible for loads of spam, thus blocked. Weird thing is, I was only trying to log in from a mate's home pc in Vermont. I didn't realise your address changed (dynamic) from time to time.
Maybe Giles should write (he's dyslexic BTW) a repotr in teh queens engerlish how this hole thang werks?
luv yer Giles ....

oi suggers, have you been at the sloe gin again? what's wrong with my english? i wonder how many people on here have read heart of darkness or paradise lost or the canterbury tales etc
i could write it up but it would be pointless waste of my time writing it and you reading it.
its not a specific ip thats being blocked its ranges which means that in a stroke you can ban from 1 to about 8 million hosts depending on how the exclude rule is formatted.
so take mine 76.151.76.162
when i want to go to the site my packets of data have to be routed all over the internet to the server and then back again, so between me and the server there are 17 different subnets i have to navigate through each one of these is controlled by a router which routes packets between subnets, switches distribute packets within a subnet.

I used to block a lot of IP addresses on one of the sites i have maintained for the last 12 years due to site rippers but you end up chasing your tale as like everything else spammers move on too
the biggest issue i had is they started using rotating IP numbers requesting 1 page every 5 - 10 seconds so what ever software you put in place they still get what they requested
what you end up left with if your not careful is collateral damage and 10's of 1000's of people not being able to view your site....with the way your banning a range of IP's this figure is in the 100 of 1000's
using alexa a a basic guide on website rankings because that all you can do with it but look at the drop in the last 4 weeks
alexa rankings for paving expert
granted some of it could be due to the adverse weather and time of year but look at the reach and bounce rate
in my opinion you need to take the strangle hold off what ever your doing to the site otherwise very shortly it will become a shadow of the site what Tony has spend a lot of time effort and of course cost over the years to build it to what it is today because the next issue you will of caused is search engine ranking problems

When I 'block' IP addresses, it withdraws their posting privileges, but they can carry on viewing and reading and following links. I wouldn't want to deprive all those pharmacologically and gynaecologically obsessed from having access to the top class advice and entertainment we provide here in the Brew Cabin.
There is no 'whitelist' of approved posters/lurkers or whatever, just a 'blacklist' of IP addresses that are not allowed to post due to previous transgressions from that IP address (or range of IP addresses in many cases located in Eastern Europe, The USA and China)
And the drop in viewing figures during December is no big surprise. The visitor rate for the whole of pavingexpert.com is extremely seasonal and always has been. We go from 180,000+ unique visitors in March/April/May/June to 70,000-ish in December and January. I'm actually grateful for the lull over these winter months as it allows me to catch up with outstanding projects and work on new developments. If there was a constant, say, 150,000 unique visitors every month, I think I'd burn out and never get anything new onto the site.

so if thats the case with banning the IP from posting how come I can't even access the forum to view any posts, the pages on the main site are OK its just access to the forum
I have noticed that additional links have appeared since using a proxy, "new posts and notes|" what I have not seen for a long time plus i stopped getting email notifications for any new posts to a thread ages ago too
i login yesterday and saw a email sent to me 14 days ago what i did not know was there, whats causing this to happen ?
