You mean a paver, you would need a mini size one and to be honest you are over complicating a simple job, 3 ton machine, 3 ton dumper use your backhoe to load the stone. Roller to compact.

1 man on dumper 1 on machine, easily done in two days if you can stockpile the stone and don't reverse into the canal. Either work your way in or out depending on the weather/conditions.

true but when dave did it on a big pathway had to keep the auger very well lubricated, there must be a place near you that hires them or wait for dave.

just had an idea, 2 metal skids 2 rsj's make a box then pull it in reverese with dumper and fill with stone as you back up, then disconnect refill etc haha

As Giles has said this is specialist work for a mini-paver - expect to pay around £1100-1300 or so a day for a machine inc two operatives, plus haulage.

How is access? Good area for a pile of stone? Any passing places on the towpath? You'd want more than one dumper I'd think to keep up with a paver. One dumper in/out to the machine would be painfully slow. Same happens to us on a bigger scale when we are surfacing single track roads....

You won't find all paver operators are willing to run stone through their machines.....
