There was a line going both ways. They use their chisel and a metal straight edge to score it. Maybe video did not pick it up.
If you look at the video when he is making the fisrt cut you should be able to see the line running the other way

incidentally anyone know what angle a pitcher should be ground at?

It's usually 5° to 10° - mine are done at 7½°

Seeing as I need a break from working out what Vp= As50.....means, here are some photies of my newest pitcher, the one that's least worn....

is that a pitcher like he was using to cut the flags is it hte angle that make it look like a spike?

The chisel they use is very short and thick with a sharp pronounced point. I will get a picture of one and post it

my grandad was a granite mason, re-built the duke of roxburgh's fire place. i`ve still got his tools, mainly lump hammers, french chalk and a large selection of cold chisels.
