Hanging gates - Hanging gatess

Hi, I am looking at hanging a pair of gates onto some random stone built pillars(800mm square concrete infilled). The gate opening is twelve foot and the gates are going to be 6ft high steel frame 80mmx40mm box section clad in oak so very heavy. The problem being the pillars are random stone so not exactly smooth and quite wide mortar joints. I am thinking of getting some 8mm steel plate 150mmx150mm, grinding the stones where they are to sit flat, and fixing with studs resined in and welding the hinges to this. I don't want to put a steel post in front of the stone post as i feel it looks totally unoriginal. Anybody have any suggestions to any other way or any suitable hinges that could be fixed directly to the pillars but ideally would have to be adjustable.
Thanks
Thanks

If you were to set a length of steel into the footing then weld a lug onto it to hang the gate on. You can then build the pillar around the steel and backfill with leanmix as you go. Any pillar you build must be tied into the footing with steel or it will be levered loose in no time. If you do it that way then it'll be the easist way of getting the gates to fit because it's no fun fitting pillars to gates especially if they're automated it's best to build them then make the gates.

Also it's best to have the bottom hinge supported on the ground it puts less pressure on the pillar and the topline stays level and doesn't dip. If the pillars are built then you could remove the high spots and pack the low spots and fix a plate with thunderbolts or rawlbolts as long as the mortar is strong enough and there's not to many small cavities for them to slip out from.

I think the OPs pillars are already built pablo
if you drill 3 holes deep into the concrete and resin fix 3 anchors say like [url=http://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/Products
/Hinges/Gate_Hinges/11695/Adjustable_Gate_Eyes]these[/url]
you might be ok
ideally the lugs should have been welded onto a 152 by 152 UB concreted into the foundation
cheers LLL

Thanks for the replys. The pillars are already built unfortunately. LLL do you mean to resin fix the eye bolts to the pillars and put the lugs on the gate. Never really thought of doing that way. I suppose three hinges would be bitter than two.
Not really looking forward to the job from previous experience of hanging double doors is bad enough, and there not as heavy! The idea is they will be automatic with an above ground ram thats why i have made them with a steel frame to stop warping as wood does. Will post a pic when i get done., Been reading the forum for a while now but this is my first post. Must say a very good forum and website.
Cheers.
