I work in Ireland are you suubbing a job over here your profile says you're in Sheffeild. A lot of councils over here north and south want you to strip the topsoil and not send it to a tip contaminated then excavate the subbase. I reckon it'll take about 60 8 wheelers. Weight isn't important the cubic bulk is because thats how tippers work. It'll take about 50 8 wheelers carrying 20 ton each to backfill it to a depth of 500mm or 990 tons.

with vosa over here its all on weight, most wagons now have on board weighing
thats how we muck away machine sits on stock pile driver backs up straight onto tracks and lifts body a few feet then we begin loading when we reach 20 tons or there abouts they pull off or horn. most wagons will take more than is legal in m3 and the fine for overloading means they are over cautious.
as a machine driver and working on a price you always tr and stick that extra bucket on which for our machines can be anyting from an extra 1.5 tons to 3 tons for a 20 tonner.

There's probably not a single tipper in this country or island that has a scale on it and Vosa are never to be seen. The drivers don't like being overloaded though and do it by eye. Topsoil and aggregate pretty much fill it to the brim but clay only does a 3/4 full load or about 8m3 of uncut ground for an 8 wheeler. Saying that the lack of enforcment of all things to do with compliance can be a godsend at times IYKWIM. I don't know of a single person who has a waste licence and all the speed camera's were turned off 2 years ago. :;):
