To trap or not to trap? - Fiddly trapping question for patio...

Hi folks.

First time here on the forum and am looking to glean some information about the drainage off my patio.

I'm about to finish a patio at home and will be draining into an existing soakaway. The soakaway is new (built with the house two years ago) and has never given any indication that it isn't working well. I plan to break into the underground pipe that takes the rainfall water from the roof of the house to the soakaway. Its all ready to go, patio nearly done and now I have just hit a snag. Can I simply allow the patio run-off to drain straight into this drainage pipe by breaking into the top of it or do I need a trap to prevent bad smells coming from the soakaway? I know its only rainwater but might silt and debris start to stink the place out of I don't trap the gully?

Any advice would be welcome. I'm erring on the side of making the gully trapped just to be safe, even though it'd make the process a lot less straightforward.

And a quick follow up question. I'm looking online at buying gullys etc but it isnt always clear if they are trapped or not. There are usually lots of snippets of info next to the product picture, but rarely whether the gully is trapped. Can I assume they all are?

it is always better to use a trap even if its just to stop crap blocking the soakaway
you need a connection into the existing pipe
breaking a hole in the top is not acceptable
you need something like this or this

and to the OP yes break in the top is unacceptable you will need to join in with a 90/45 three way
