Sealing new plaster

In the van on the m1 heading for the tunnel, arguing with my mate about his house, had it reskimmed and I'm saying best off sealing it with a diluted emulsion mix and pva for kitchen and bathroom. Our decorators do this and seen it on most Sites but he thinks he knows better and doesn't have to.

Bloody musicians, anyone know of new paints etc that mean you don't have to?

pva should'nt be used where damp conditions will occur ie kitchens, bathrooms etc. I think just watered down coating will do the trick. also i think you can use the pre wallpaper paste stuff, can't think of the name at the minute.

I know it's water soluble but seen a few web pages that say use pva in bathrooms and kitchens and if you are going to use oil based paints you should use pva

Usually a thin coat of emulsion is used ,called a p1ss coat. This seals the dust from plastering. Also, if the skim as been polished too much, he might have to rough it up with sandpaper as it will reduced adhesion.

I concur with henpecked, never heard or seen a painter using polybond

our fella mist coats it with watered down emulsion then fills anything that needs it
the only time i see him use PVA is when trying to paint over old lead based paints on coving that cant be rubbed down

There was a thread on the screwfix site on this subject some time back, got quite heated with P & D tradesman of 20 years falling out over what was the best practice.

I always thought a mist coat of thin emulsion was standard but as someone has mentioned very thin wallpaper paste is also a good sealant prior to papering.

dulux do a new plaster paint (emulsion), expensive mind. I always understood you used a watered down emulsion as a base coat, or just straight B&Q value emulsion which is essential the same thing!!

Yes, size is used when papering as a pose to painting, hence the 'watered down paste' bit.

just got back 1500 miles in 36 hours, 1 festival in a castle ruin, no sleep lots of jaeger and wine, 3 blood injuries i knocked the above mentioned freind and lead singer out in what can only be described as horse play after the gig and jeagermeister, kind of wrestling and we both ended up on the floor.

he was out cold so we bungled him into the trusty mid sized transit 98 on an S plate and headed for calais at 5.30am this morning. i sobered up and drove the last 5 hours, van only do 70 on a downhill run and the seat was stuck right forward which for an 18 stone, 6ft rugby lad with size 13 boots isnt very comfy.

but had a cracking time, quality trip lots of banter

Tony, we use 28 for chesterfield but stayed in Yately, on thursday night to get an early start.
