Hi,
First post. I've been given the "privilege" of doing the layout for this area of pavers for a local university. Having never done anything this big, or complicated (to me), here I am asking for some advice. Or maybe just a sanity check.

Here's how I'm thinking of doing the layout:

To me, one important line is the line "under" the 27'-2" dimension line on the left side as it goes all the way from one end, through the center of the circle, to the other end.

I'm thinking I would want to start at the extreme left and right, starting my herringbone patterns from the bottom right and top left corners and work toward the center. Or do you think you'd be able to tell the difference if I started from the top right and top left corners? The pattern would be reversed, but I think I'd have an easier time keeping the horizontal line accurate because I'd be starting from the same horizontal line in the beginning, instead of coming from the top on one end and the bottom at the other end.

Another option I just found would be to start in the bottom right corner, fill into the mid line and start the left side going from the mid line and fill towards the up direction in the pic. And then back fill the bottom left quadrant.

I'd work towards the outermost circle. Once I've got the horizontal center line fixed I'd pick the center of the circle along that line and layout the center pavers. Cut in the innermost circle, layout the circular patterns, then fill from the left and right areas into the outermost circle.

I guess I'm thinking that in the CAD program you can make the pattern carry all the way through from left to right and in the center circle. But in reality the only thing that really matters is the center horizontal line under the 27'-2" dimension line in the drawing on the left side, and that the diagonal pattern is the same, i.e. from bottom left to top right in this case. If the 3 areas are shifted a little left to right in relation to each other you'll never see it unless you're in a helicopter with a camera and some sort of grid to check it against.

Make sense, or not?

Thanks,
Monte

Hi monte
welcome to the brew cabin

useful info here for 45 deg herrinngbone

also here

and a bit more

here :-)

generally speaking block paving is always started at 1 end then worked using a line to the other
believe me you will see it if its skew whiff

its not a difficult job to achieve your drawing :)

Personally i would do all the edges first, then complete the circle as a finished job then fill in the rest You seem to have access from all areas so choice is yours where to start. Take on board LLLs suggestions. Will be a nice job, keeps us updated.

First off, thanks for the replies. This will look great if I can pull it off, but it will look really bad if I don't.

As I've been messing with my drawing (I redrew the whole thing myself so I could see what's going on) there are 3 major lines that will catch the eye when standing on the ground. The first are the horizontal and vertical lines in the drawing. The main pattern keeps going off the drawing to the left and the road has a curve in it so the horizontal lines will be running into a curb at some point. The other lines are the 45* lines along the points of the pavers. There will be areas you will be able to stand and look through the pavers in the center of the circle and line up the 45* line with pavers outside the circle.

I'm almost thinking about laying out the whole area of 90* herringbone, then laying out the inner and outer circles and removing the herringbone pavers. That would guarantee the pavers in the center are on the pattern with the rest of the area.

@ lutonlagerlout, isn't this a 90* herringbone pattern, not a 45*?

@ seanandruby, yeah, I'm going to do the border pavers first, they aren't in the original pic I posted. Then start in the bottom right corner of my new drawing and fill from right to left. I'm just not sure if I can jump over the circle and start the pattern on the other side of it and keep the 45* lines lined up between the center pavers and the 2 areas outside the circles.

Looking at the original pic the "borders" shown are poured concrete grade beams. This drawing shows the border pavers that are supposed to be there, but aren't in the drawing for some reason. They show up in a smaller detail.
