hi ken luton was spot on manhole in line with drain and only 400mm deep single brick built no room to corbel we put our laying mix arround it to beef it up. that lid was off the shelf one to to turn to make inline 150 pound more on a granite job would have put one in but costs were tight due to cbp quotes :p :;):ken wrote:That looks tip top. This is purely a question and not a criticism, what’s the reason the inset manhole cover was not installed parallel with the paving?

I'm not speaking for cooky, but from personal experience i have found that old brick man holes tend to be parallel to the main run ,which is mostly not in like with the house
so without a lot of corbelling the cover can only go 1 way
unless you are Monsieur g'ammage and you get 1 specially made :;):
Is that indian stone that is coursed ?

thats what we call random coursed allows for more scope .we allways look after the gardens but because we lay the paving to look right and not follow exs garden levels we then remake garden to new levels happy all round ps we allways lay a band course to outside edges makes laying easier in wales we call them idiot sticks :plutonlagerlout wrote:I have never seen injun stone laid coursed like that, and i have to say it looks rather fetching
as i said before i like the fact the same as mickg's work the site looks like no one has been there

i think it would be advisable to purchase a new concrete manhole frame rather than using 4 pieces of cut flag around the top of a manhole

For what reason? If the 4 pieces of cut flag around the top of a manhole are correctly concreted in place and the manhole cover looks ascetically pleasing and is square to the paving why purchase a new concrete manhole frame? I use to install my inset recess trays parallel to the existing cover I was replacing ,… until I worked for the gaffer

well first and foremost a concrete flag is not reinforced
second you are bedding 4 separate items of which 2 will run through and rest on either side of the manhole brickwork or concrete rings but the other 2 will be cut in between leaving a weak spot
third it's certainly is not a profession way of constructing the top to a manhole especially in a driveway
but each to their own and I am sure 4 pieces of flag would not conform to any BS standard, but a concrete manhole cover does

corbelling is a brickwork technique, for changing the plane of a wall
as seen on this site
personally i dont like interfering with access to an IC and if it displease you that much maybe its time to move the IC
however as ken says if the gaffer wants it then the gaffer gets it,be it our own dear leader or anyone else paying
the whole issue of inset covers i find aesthetically nasty to look at
but they are a necessary evil
