I built on a poor lot in Connecticut, USA. The radius of my driveway is 25 feet above grade. My wife is nervous because of slippery winters and the height difference. I was think of constructing a concrete curb in six feet sections. Each section would ride up and down on an 8' steel lolly column which has 4' buried. The column would be below the frost point, so I am hoping that the curb could rise and fall with the frost. Does anyone have any experience with this type of construction?

Thanks :)

It's unlikely that anyone over here will be familiar with such a construction - in fact, some of the terms you use are alien to us: poor lot? lolly column?

You're probably better off asking a US-based contractor as the methods and materials we use in Britain and Ireland are totally different to those used in your country. We have a maritime climate: you have a continental climate. This means our construction methods are not always suitable for your climate.

Hey Tony,
I get a kick out of trying to figure out some of the terms you are using also. Ludites ? Merkin? ways and such. I just use my imagination. But I really to enjoy reading your posts.

Lolly Column usually refers to a round steel supporting post. Like the ones free standing in a basement to support the above floor/story.

The "poor lot" in Conn. I think probably refers to a "not so suitable building site" but Rich could probably clarify that.

Hey Rich,
I am trying to imagine what you are describing.
When you say a curb in 6' sections do you mean a retaining wall of some sort? As far as the loly column construction? I am at a loss as to what you are describing. I do have a lot of experience with retaining wall construction. So perhaps if you can give a bit more description. We may be able to offer better advise.
I am located in MD USA.
