Yes will go and check tomorrow who was around and if they saw anything.
Regarding the expected length of time it should take - can anyone give me any indication of whether one day would be "normal" for 100sqm.

100m 2 is doable with a 4 man gang
2 on the barrow,1 on the rake and 1 on the roller
but it seems strange he said 2 days then did it in 1

He said he had been planning on digging up another drive as well on Day 1 but it had got cancelled so he cracked on with mine instead. Not sure how many guys were here but they can't have used any big machines as the access is difficult.
Think I will just need to talk it through with him tomorrow before I pay up.

without calling the bloke a liar, you could ask to see the receipts from the mac plant which should have both types base/wearing listed for yesterday with a gap (in time) between them, and not for first thing in the morning. don't pay up till you are sure are sure you have got what you are paying for.

This is my thinking to get there unload a macine, cut out old tarmac dig up and cart away, waiting on wagons to muck away and if access is difficult then would only be small wagons is going some to shift that in a day. Then lay 2 courses by hand, are there no grids or anything that used to be flush with the old surface to use as a reference?

Advice needed - accepted quote for relaying tarmac drive which involved scraping existing surface on day 1 and then laying and rolling 20mm bitumen macadam base course and then 25mm wearing course on day 2.

Define "scraping" as detailed on the specification.

Nothing wrong with hard scraping the existing (poor) surface, plane off areas to enable the new surfacing to tie-in with the given levels, then regulating areas with 20mm and/or 6mm material then overlaying the lot with 30/6 surface course material.
