Driveway saftey

Hi All,

Am looking for some advice on how to maintain pedestrian safety between my and next door flagged driveways.

Have had to relay mine as over the years they have sunk and the cars are now grounding as they come over the pavement edge and down the drives.

Between the two drives is a narrow bed of gravel which is 2ft wide at the garage end and just 5� wide at the pavement end.

Any previous variance in driveway levels has been taken up by the gravel , but now that I have re-leveled mine there is an 8ft length near the pavement where my flags are up to 3 to 4� higher than the neighbours drive; a bit too steep for gravel.

I could put a fillet of cement across but this still presents a steep slope that people may trip on .. ??

Wondered if it would be better to put a 2� x 6� round top concrete edging strip along my flagstone edges to make a the level change more obvious - but again wondered if that considered safe enough ?

( the neighbours are very old and unlikely to do anything to re-level their drive )

could you post a photo, it sound like you have changed the level of the driveway from what it used to be

Afraid I have nowhere to upload a pic to - don't use web space etc.

Yes I have lifted my drive to its original level so next doors in now some 3-4" lower at towards the top /pavement end, where most settlement has occurred over the last 30 years.

As the gap between my flags and there flags is only 5" if I concrete across is still going to be quiet a slope of about 40% -wondering if that is safe enough or if I need to take some other precautions to stop people tripping up - both drives/ gardens are open plan.

i take it the middle of the 5" gap is the boundary, could you not install either a large key kerb or a concrete edging

this would form a step between both the driveway levels and act as a restraint to hold what under your flags in place plus it would look neater than a concrete ramp

another way is to use something like scottish pebbles which are larger in size than normal gravel and will stay in place on the steep slope

Thanks for those ideas.. yes down the middle is the boundary, but don't think they would want a full width kerb stone down it, plus it might catch the underside of their visitors cars more if they do not go straight down their drive.

Think the cobbles is a good idea, the local councils use them a lot to stop pedestrians going into certain areas so sure they will pass health and safety !
