Not strictly a paving related question... but I’ve been meaning to paint the outside of my house for a number of years but never seem to get round to it. This year is no different and I’ve got the additional time constraint of doing my DIY paving project.

I noticed 2 people from a local contractors painting the houses opposite so asked them for a quote.

My house is a 1950’s 3 bed semi detached, so it’s nothing exceptional. The job entails painting all of the rendered walls, which is the upper floor only. So that’s the front, 1 side of the house, and rear of the property, the wooden eaves beneath the gutters, and the 2 walls of a kitchen extension.

I didn’t know what to expect as I have never paid for this type of work before, but I nearly fell over when I saw their price. £1890.00 !! Yes, that’s ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND NINETY POUNDS. The labour alone was £1600 !!

Does this seem excessive ? Naturally I’m going to get alternative quotes, but if they are anything like this then I will have to do the job myself.

My neighbour had a quote to spray his 3 bed detached single story bungalow, 3 walls as the front is sandstone and was quoted £7000

Needless to say he never had it done

Personally I'd do it myself and use the money saved to buy a good quality paint like this one

thats cheap paul, down here an outside is roughly 2 1/2 to 3 grand +VAT
proper job mind
all timber work rubbed down 2 coats of undercoat and 1 of gloss
and masonry paint on the render
that would equate to roughly 80-110 a day which i think is fair
