Lovely to see all the photies - my guess is, your son will rebel, as we all do, and become a world famous aesthete, a man of letters and renowned poet.
I always think of ex PM John Majors - who ran away from a circus family to become an accountant.
ps - give us a shout when you're next darn sth Giles.

It's such a pleasure to read about workmen in the (and I am using this word loosely) 'building' trade who take pride in what they do.

This forum has been invaluable for me over the past year and certainly made me put the pressure on to ensure things were done in the correct manner

Keep it up guys :D

yeah, backs onto a tree screen for a industrial estate, clay heave and shrink from the tress drawing out water.

its that or pile it, or raft the whole 8x8m, but then theres structural engineer costs and steel and lots of concrete, see what the builder wants us to do he's paying.

sometimes its better to use a private building inspector
they cost a packet but can save you a fortune in situations like this

I was the same a few years ago, inspector came out and because the 15' high conifer hedge was only 3m away had to dig down 2.3m

already dug out the normal depth of 1m so had to hire a 5.5 ton machine to track over the first trench, customer paid so it was sorted

yeah i'm thinking that as well, our 8 ton wont fit past the house to get to the back, can just about do it with the 3 ton but will be a struggle, have to fill the front side in to get the dumper across right pain.

he has said if we hit sand after 300mm then thats ok, but i'm not confident of finding it all the way around, there some on the front corner at about 1m down but doesn;t look likely loking at the strata.
